Building Information Modeling (BIM) has transformed the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector.
It is continuously gaining global acceptance in recent years.
While BIM is both a process (Modeling) and a product (Digital Model), it cannot be achieved without technology, part of which is a set of Interoperable Tools/Software.
This comprehensive, but introductory workshop will take you through the Tool Ecology with which disparate design teams can create a Unified BIM Model.
It is a 12-day workshop spanning the entire Digital Design Coordination Process.
Each module is handled by the specialized expert(s) on the respective tool/technology.
It ends with creating Business Values leveraging BIM.
The workshop is collaboratively presented by Blaze Academy, BIM Africa and Thinklab International - leading firms/organizations in Intellectual Capital Growth and Digital Construction Consultancy.

DAY 1 – BIM EXECUTION PLANNING

The first day of the workshop will introduce the concepts of BIM but will focus more on the practical and business values of BIM.

An important activity of this first day is BIM Execution Planning: from how to establish BIM Goals, to how to map the BIM Process, to how to populate an Information Exchange Worksheet, to how to appraise the Supporting Infrastructure needed to achieve the BIM Goals.

DAY 2 – COMMON DATA ENVIRONMENT

Central to BIM is Information.

The second day of this workshop will focus on how to set up a centralized source of information, otherwise known as the Common Data Environment (CDE).

This will aid information exchanges during the collaborative design processes – all the way to the entire project life cycle.

A focal tool here is Autodesk BIM 360.

DAY 3 – CONCEPTUAL DESIGN 1

The true creativity of Architects come to life during the conceptual design phase.

Such tools as Sketch-up, Grasshopper etc. has helped great Architects play around with their design ideas.

However, a lot of these creative efforts get repeated during detail design stage due to interoperability issues.

The third day will focus on how to create intelligent conceptual forms that are easily converted to detail design down the line.

A focal tool here is Autodesk FormIt.

DAY 4 – CONCEPTUAL DESIGN 2

As the industry is advancing from CAD to BIM and beyond, design gradually starts to get more generative and computational.

The focus of day 4 is generative/computational design, and how the programming powers of the computer can be leveraged to achieve even more complex design iterations…

A focal tool here is Dynamo Studio.

DAY 5 – COLLABORATIVE DESIGN 1

The primary advantages of BIM during design coordination hinges on a collaborative design workflow.

Interdisciplinary coordination is more possible than ever via the right BIM Software.

Day 5 focuses on the Architectural facet of design coordination.

A focal tool here is Autodesk Revit (Architecture) – on BIM 360 Design.

DAY 6 – COLLABORATIVE DESIGN 2

While design iterations begin with the Architects, they work closely with Structural Engineers to ensure the constructability and the structural stability of their design iterations.

Day 6 will focus on structural designs and analysis possible with BIM tools.

A focal tool here is the Autodesk Revit (Structure) – on BIM 360 Design.

DAY 7 – COLLABORATIVE DESIGN 3

While the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing professions took a while to come up to speed with Building Information Modeling, the multidisciplinary tools have leveled up.

Day 7 will focus more on the MEP Tools.

A focal tool here is Autodesk Revit (MEP) – on BIM 360 Design.

DAY 8 – VISUALIZATION

One of the early promises of BIM was 3D Visualization. This quickly brought about the rebirth of Virtual Reality (VR).

There’s no better way to communicate design intents and progress than through virtual 3D simulation.

Day 8 focuses just on the 3D Visualizations, with emphasis on VR.

A focal tool here is Autodesk Revit Live.

DAY 9 – ANALYSES

Sparse sustainable buildings are one of the major challenges facing both local and global contexts.

This has brought about joint efforts by numerous organizations to seek Sustainable Goals.

With the right BIM tools, lots of analyses can be carried out right on the BIM Model: spanning from Energy to Lighting Analyses, Mechanical and Structural Analyses.

This is the focus of day 9, and the focal tool here is Autodesk Insight 360.

DAY 10 – PROJECT PHASING AND COSTING

One of the low hanging fruits of BIM is leveraging the intelligent data generated, for Project Planning (4D BIM) and Project Costing/Estimation (5D BIM).

These ensure projects are accurately delivered within scope, time and budget.

These are the focus of Day 10 and the focal tool here is Autodesk Navisworks Manage – this also comes with Clash Detection Tests.

DAY 11 – BIM DATA CUSTOMIZATION

The direction of various BIM tools is web interface/web collaboration.

With the rise of the Common Data Environment (CDE), design data is getting unified.

With the power of cloud computing and web technology, this unified design data that is on the web can be leveraged to create custom solutions for AEC Firms.

This emerging trend is the focus of Day 11, and the focal technology here is Autodesk Forge Technology.

DAY 12 – BIM-BASED BUSINESS VALUE CREATION

The previous modules of the workshop focused on specific BIM Uses that are achievable with diverse BIM Tools.

However, these technological aspects of BIM will not be maximized if the Business Values are not clearly outlined.

The final day of the workshop will focus on how to create Business Values from BIM – especially for SME Firms.

This will entail Value Engineering, Team Motivation, Resource Management etc.  – for SME Firms to adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of the Information Age while staying competitive and profitable.
